GCWAM 2027 is a new strategic initiative focused on building an international community of women in applied mathematicians across the UK, Europe, Asia and Africa. This workshop will showcase brilliant research led by women around the world in (i) continuum mechanics, (ii) mathematical biology and mathematics for healthcare, (iii) numerical methods and (iv) data science, amongst other emerging topics in applied mathematics. Additionally, GCWAM 2027 will also include multiple roundtable discussions on opportunities for early career researchers, research funding, mentoring, careers in mathematics outside academia with a global lens.
GCWAM 2027 builds on the resounding success of the UK Retreats for Women in Applied Mathematics (RWAM), 2023-2026. The UK RWAM events have multiple tangible successes – the popular “Women in Applied Mathematics Mentoring Scheme (WAMMS)” with 80 members, led by Dr Hannah-May D’Ambrosio (University of Glasgow) and Dr Laura Currie (Durham); a special issue of the journal, La Matematica – official journal of the Association for Women in Mathematics, dedicated to RWAM 2025; global impact in Southeast Asia and Africa, e.g., Majumdar was the UK organiser for the RWAM-Southeast Asia event at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics in September 2025.
GCWAM 2027 builds on the overarching message from the UK RWAM events – this is the right time to capitalise on previous successes to build a unified and accessible platform for women in mathematics (or people who identify as women) around the world, that can facilitate networking, scientific collaborations in applied mathematics, mentoring and open discussions around career progression, knowledge exchange, best practices in teaching etc.
Participation
This workshop to open to women in applied mathematics (or people who identify as women). UK participants will be selected by means of an online application form. There is funding to cover accommodation costs for selected participants. UK-based ECRs will be given priority for funding purposes.
