This research school immersed a diverse group of passionate postgraduate students and early career researchers from across Latin America in a world-class research experience that will introduce them to cutting-edge machine learning research. The school focussed on the mathematical and computational foundation of deep learning, with a particular focus on applications to computational photography, biomedical imaging, speech and language processing, video, and computer vision. This is an exciting and rapidly evolving field, as well as a field with tremendous potential for generating economic and social benefit. However, Latin America is struggling to engage with these developments because of a lack of connectivity to the leading research centres, lack of critical mass, lack of HPC infrastructure, and a combination of limited research funding, high travel costs, and high conference fees (also, the main conferences of the field take place in North America, Europe, or Asia). The barriers are particularly acute in Central America. The research school was delivered by a team of nine leading machine learning researchers from the statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering communities. There were 245 participants from twelve countries.
