The best conference I have been to in my academic career to date. I really loved the combination of PhD students, post docs/fellows, lecturers and professors during this event. I loved the size of the event. I have gained more from this than any other academic event and think it is beneficial for women to come at least once at each stage of their careers. – 2025 participant
This event is invaluable to the women in applied mathematics community. It’s a celebratory and supportive space to share the excellent research of women across diverse fields in applied mathematics. From this, new collaborations and mentorship networks are formed, investing in the research excellence of the future. – 2025 participant
The Retreat for Women in Applied Mathematics 2026 (RWAM 2026) is a five-day retreat for female applied mathematicians (or people who identify as female) from all career stages (PhD, postdoc, junior or senior faculty), generally working in the field of mathematical modelling across the physical sciences, biology and engineering. Building on the successes of RWAM 2023, 2024 and 2025, RWAM 2026 will be a distinctive event touching different aspects of careers in mathematics. The programme will feature plenary/keynote research talks; contributed research talks; a poster session along with roundtables on ECR issues; EDI in mathematics; research funding; knowledge exchange in mathematics and international perspectives on under-represented groups in mathematics. The objectives of RWAM 2026 remain the same as those of RWAM 2023, 2024 and 2025, namely, to create a sense of community and a unified forum for sharing information about scientific opportunities, funding, teaching and career progression amongst female applied mathematicians in the UK and beyond. Prior successes include, but are not limited to, a popular Women in Applied Mathematics Mentoring Scheme, a forthcoming special issue of “La Matematica”, global versions of the RWAM event at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics and AIMS Senegal and successful network grant applications etc.
