People make mathematics – Glasgow leads the bid to host ICM 2030
Our colleagues at the University of Glasgow School of Mathematics and Statistics are leading the UK-Ireland bid to host the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2030. They have put together an impressive and innovative bid. ICMS is pleased to support their bid and we are tremendously excited about the prospect of the ICM taking place in our neighbouring city, Glasgow. The bid – along with a bid to host the General Assembly in Dublin beforehand – is outstanding. There is an informative film explaining the principals behind their bid and aims, including the unique concept of a “2km congress”. All of their proposed venues are within a 250m radius of the Scottish Event Campus with accommodation at all price points available close by. This will allow the participants to spend more time collaborating and less time travelling between venues and accommodation. In addition, the Glasgow team have a target of raising $2.25 million to fully fund the participation at the Congress by 900 mathematicians from developing countries. These are just two of the creative and thoughtful elements of the bid, please do take a look for yourself.
The decision on where ICMS 2030 will take place will be made on 21 July this year at the International Mathematical Union General Assembly ahead of the 2026 ICM in Philadelphia. We hope that the bid is successful and we will all be heading to Glasgow in July 2030.
